(Washington) – The State Department today announced a settlement with Libya to compensate the American victims of Libyan-sponsored terrorist attacks. In accordance with the Libyan Claims Resolution Act, today’s settlement allows the families of victims of these attacks to receive compensation from Libya. These attacks include the 1980 bombing of PanAm flight 103, the 1986 bombing of the LaBelle disco, the 1985 Rome airport shooting, and other incidents.

"I am very pleased that the day of justice has finally come for those who have suffered at the hands of Libyan state-sponsored terrorism," said Chairman Conyers. "These attacks killed and injured hundreds of Americans including the son of Robert Beecham of Michigan, the lead plaintiff in the case against Libya. As a champion of the legal rights of these families, I applaud the implementation of the Libyan Claims Resolution Act to bring this long dispute to a close."
