Saratoga Springs, NY - Today, local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand announced that she will hold a town hall meeting for kids, this Monday, January 7th, at 1:30pm at the Gowana Middle School auditorium located at 970 Route 146, Clifton Park on Internet Safety.
In addition to internet safety tips from Congresswoman Gillibrand, the student town hall will include a multi-media presentation from iSAFE, a non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth to make their Internet experiences safe and responsible, and Jim Murphy, the Saratoga County District Attorney.
"According to a recent study by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, approximately one in every seven youth between the ages of 10 and 17 is sexually solicited over the Internet," said Gillibrand, a member of the Armed Services Committee and mother of a 4 year old son. "As a parent, I am extremely concerned about these dangers to children and in Congress I am working to provide parents and law enforcement officials with the tools they need to protect our kids and prosecute those who use the web to do them harm."
According to the National Assessment Center i-SAFE data one in five students (20%) in grades 5-12 report having met in person with someone they had originally met on the Internet, 11% of high school students have been "cyber-stalked," and 65% of high school students admit to unsafe, inappropriate, or illegal activities online.
In addition to the town hall for kids, Congresswoman Gillibrand will announce her Online Safety Toolkit, a one stop shop of informational resources for parents who want to learn how to keep their kids safe on the Internet. The toolkit can be found on her Congressional website at: http://www.gillibrand.house.gov/
Later in the day, Congresswoman Gillibrand will hold a "Congress at Your Corner" event with seniors at the Wesley Independent Living Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.
