Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand’s
Energy Solutions for Upstate New York
Local Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand knows that all across Upstate New York and the North Country, residents are struggling with high costs. As your Congresswoman, she is fighting for immediate steps to lower the price of gas at the pump.
At the same time, Congresswoman Gillibrand understands that by making Upstate New York a leader in energy independence, and shifting U.S. energy policies towards independence from oil, we create new jobs, increase our national security, and protect our natural resources
Short Term Solutions
- Cut the Gas Tax – Congresswoman Gillibrand has called for eliminating the $0.18 federal gas tax for the next six months to provide immediate relief for record prices.
- Increase Domestic Supply – Congresswoman Gillibrand has called for the President to suspend oil purchases into the Strategic Reserve and called for an additional drawdown of fifteen million barrels of oil to immediately reduce the price of gas by as much as $0.25 per gallon.
In addition, Congresswoman Gillibrand has sponsored legislation to force oil companies to drill for more oil on the domestic lands that are approved to tap today.
- Reinvest in Better Solutions – Congresswoman Gillibrand has worked to cut tax breaks for corn based ethanol and re-invest in non-food based crops for cleaner energy that doesn’t drive up food and fuel costs.
- Crack Down on Price Gouging and Fixing - Congresswoman Gillibrand voted to authorize the Federal Trade Commission to investigate illegal price fixing by OPEC and price gouging at the pump.
Long Term Solutions
- American Jobs—American Independence - Congresswoman Gillibrand stood up to the special interest groups and voted to take away billions of dollars of tax breaks for oil companies making record profits and invest in American jobs.
- Home Grown Fuels - As Upstate New York’s voice on the House Agriculture Committee, Congresswoman Gillibrand has been pushing for locally grown biofuels as alternatives to gas and corn-ethanol, which drive up our food prices.
- Create Jobs–Lower Energy Costs - Congresswoman Gillibrand voted to provide tax credits for renewable energy, which promotes investment and growth in renewable energy technologies like production and installation of solar panels and geothermal units in our homes, businesses and municipal buildings. She has also worked to expand the ability of our dairy farmers to use waste to convert methane, a greenhouse gas, into clean energy. This will help create jobs and lower utility costs.
