Sawyer County is located in northwest Wisconsin and was created in 1901 from Ashland and Chippewa Counties.  The county was named after Philetus Sawyer, a lumberman from Oshkosh and U.S. Senator. 

 

The reservation of the Lac Courte Orielles (LCO) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is located in Sawyer County.  The county seat is Hayward.

 

Population:    16,713 (2003 estimate)

Land Area:     1,256 square miles
