Wood County is located in central Wisconsin and was created in 1856 from a then larger Portage County.  It was named after Joseph Wood, a state legislator who introduced legislation to create Wood County and was one of founding citizens of the county.
 

 

The geographic center of the state is located in Wood County, about 9 miles southeast of Marshfield.  The county seat is Wisconsin Rapids.

 

Population:    75,402 (2003 estimate)

Land Area:     793 square miles
