Blunt Statement on Passage of Economic Rescue Package

Washington, Oct 3 -

House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement this afternoon subsequent to House passage of the economic rescue package, legislation aimed at stabilizing our financial markets and ensuring the availability of credit remains intact for American consumers, homeowners, and small business owners:

“If the past few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that each and every one of us with a mortgage to pay, a payroll to make, or a pension to look forward to has a very real stake in the strength and stability of our financial markets. When a small business owner with good credit can’t get a loan to cover his overhead, that’s not only a problem for his business – it’s a problem for every single person he employs. And our economy in general.

“The action we were forced to take this week on the House floor was extraordinary, difficult, and necessary. And though not a perfect bill, I was proud to lend my hand to the process in a way to help ensure taxpayer protections were included, and unrelated special-interest give-aways were left out. I’m also proud to support the middle-class tax relief measures included in the final package.

“I want to recognize the leadership and hard work of members like Chris Shays and Joe Knollenberg. They were the first to take the lead on the crucial issue of expanding the role of the FDIC, and their work went a long way toward making this package a reality.”
