Rep. Klein Issues Statement Concerning Bill Proenza’s Removal as National Hurricane Center Director

July 9, 2007

Washington, DC -- {U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (FL-22) issued the following statement Monday concerning Bill Proenza’s removal as the director of the National Hurricane Center.

“While it is not my responsibility to get in the middle of personnel issues, losing the head of the National Hurricane Center right in the middle of hurricane season greatly concerns me.

“I have heard from a number of weather experts, including several at the National Hurricane Center, that QuikSCAT is a valuable tool among many that helps forecasters detect and track hurricanes, as well as other deadly storms. The fact that there are now reports being cited contradicting these claims makes the need for a congressional hearing even greater. I look forward to working with my colleagues of the House Science Committee to determine a date in the very near future.

“The bottom line is, our forecasters need the necessary tools to prevent as much damage from natural disasters as possible. Let's keep our focus on that objective.”
