Klein Commends Federal Response to Beach Emergencies in Palm Beach County

May 15, 2007

Washington, DC -- The last hurdle to rebuilding the devastation to Palm Beach County’s beaches from Subtropical Storm Andrea was passed late Tuesday afternoon when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took federal jurisdiction of a critically eroded section of Jupiter Inlet.  It followed similar measures by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) earlier in the day for Singer Island, the Town of South Palm Beach, and the Town of Lantana.  Now all four areas of Palm Beach County can begin rebuilding their beaches for the upcoming hurricane season, which commences in sixteen days.  According to one County official, work can start as early as next week.

“This has been a difficult week for everyone involved since Subtropical Storm Andrea pummeled the beaches of Palm Beach County.  But I’m pleased that local, state, and federal officials were able to find common ground and move forward on rebuilding the shoreline before another devastating storm becomes a threat to human lives and personal property,” said Klein.  “The residents of Palm Beach County deserve nothing less.

“I would also like to thank Commissioner Karen Marcus, Senator Jeff Atwater, and everyone else who had a hand in this effort. Our work together on this issue is a good example of all of us working together to get the job done for the residents of Palm Beach County."
