Klein Calls on Crist to Declare State of Emergency for Areas of Palm Beach County

May 10, 2007

Washington, DC -- U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (FL-22) Thursday called on Governor Charlie Crist to declare the areas of Jupiter, Singer Island, and Lantana/South Palm Beach in Palm Beach County a State of Emergency. Those areas were severely damaged as result of dangerous waves from Subtropical Storm Andrea that crashed against Palm Beach County’s already eroded shoreline.

“The areas of Jupiter, Singer Island, Lantana, and South Palm Beach are in dire straits. The high tide and waves have resulted in structural damage, particularly in Jupiter State Beach Park and on Singer Island. Given this extreme circumstance, I urge Governor Charlie Crist to use his executive authority and declare Jupiter, Singer Island, and Lantana in Palm Beach County a State of Emergency.”

Governor Crist has the power to declare a State of Emergency following a natural disaster.

Dear Gov. Crist:

I write to you concerning the dire situation in parts of Palm Beach County.  As you know, earlier this week subtropical storm Andrea produced dangerous waves that crashed against Palm Beach County’s eroded shoreline.  The effects were devastating, producing widespread flooding and structural damage to numerous communities, and completely negating the County’s dune restoration efforts this past year.

The most severely impacted areas are Jupiter, Singer Island, and Lantana/South Palm Beach.  These areas were left with little or no shoreline protection at the start of what is expected to be an active hurricane season.  After having extensive conversations with officials in those areas, I respectfully request you to use your executive authority as Governor of the State of Florida to declare a State of Emergency for the three areas.  In addition, I respectfully ask that you appropriate any and all state funding associated with a declaration of a State of Emergency.

I thank you in advance for your careful deliberation on this urgent matter, and I look forward to working with you and your officials to help ensure the safety of the residents of South Florida.

Sincerely,

Ron Klein
Member of Congress
