May 8, 2007

Washington, DC -- U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (FL-22) today announced that Joseph Perri, a junior at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, has been chosen by a group of judges as the 22nd congressional district winner of the 26th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Perri’s art piece titled, “Where the Sky Meets the Shore,” will join other winning art pieces from districts across the country on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year, following a ribbon cutting ceremony in Washington D.C. June 28th.

Morgan Munoz-Brewer, a senior who also attends Monarch High School, was awarded second place for her art piece and Caitlin O’Brien, who attends Pompano High School, came in third. Both Munoz-Brewer’s piece, “Sunset Siesta Key,” and O’Brien’s, “Hillsboro Afternoon,” will be on display in Klein’s Washington, D.C., office.

“The 26th Annual Congressional Art Competition provides students across the country a unique opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity in one of the most historic buildings in the United States – the United States Capitol,” said Klein. “I am happy to announce that this year’s winning art piece, designed by Joseph Perri of Coconut Creek, will represent Florida’s 22nd Congressional district in the tunnel that connects the House of Representatives office buildings to the Capitol for a year.

“I would also like to applaud our second place winner Morgan Munoz-Brewer and our third place winner Caitlin O’Brien, whose art will hang in my Washington, D.C. office. And I would like to thank all of the students who submitted artwork to this competition. I wish I could display every piece of art work that was entered into the contest. South Florida is truly fortunate to have so many talented and dynamic artists.”

Five judges selected the winning pieces of art during a ceremony at the Boca Art Museum late last week. Those judges include:  Adrienne Chadwick, Director of the Art Institute, Young at Art Children’s Museum in Davie; Maureen Kohler, Executive Director of ArtServe in Ft. Lauderdale; Kim Cavendish, President/CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science Blockbuster IMAX Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale; Claire Elisabeth Clum, Curator of Education at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Boca Raton; and Reiko Nishioka, Education Director of the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach. Klein and his staff members were not involved in the judging.
