Klein Announces Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Assignments

{January 23, 2007}

Washington, DC -- U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (FL-22) on Tuesday was appointed to three subcommittees on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, a committee he was appointed to earlier this month by the House Leadership. Klein will serve on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.

“I am honored to serve on these Subcommittees.  The jurisdiction for each is important for South Florida,” said Klein. “The Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia will allow South Florida another seat at the table when discussing middle east affairs and strengthening our commitment to Israel.  On the Western Hemisphere subcommittee, I look forward to strengthening our economy by promoting trade and economic growth with Latin America.”

“Maintaining the safety and security of our ports and borders is of critical importance right now, which is why I’m also proud to serve on the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.  Florida’s 22nd District contains two critical deep water ports, the Port of Everglades and the Port of Palm Beach.  This committee will play a vital role in the war on terrorism and making sure that trade relations with all countries are in check.”

The Subcommittees on the Middle East and South Asia, and the Western Hemisphere,  have jurisdiction over matters affecting the political relations between the U.S. and the respective countries within the subcommittees’ jurisdiction, legislation and oversight regarding human rights practices in particular countries, oversight of regional lending institutions, and oversight of access agreements and regional security pacts, among other responsibilities.

The subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade oversees programs to combat terrorism; matters involving nuclear and weapons of mass destruction; matters relating to economic and trade policy; measures related to export promotion and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).

Klein was appointed to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, which has jurisdiction over U.S. relations with foreign nations, protection of American citizens abroad, intervention of declarations of war and abroad, and foreign trade with enemy countries, among other responsibilities. He also serves on the exclusive House Financial Services Committee.
