Washington, DC -- U.S. Rep. Ron Klein today applauded the step that the country has taken toward energy independence, as the President signed the Energy Independence and Security Act into law. The law will increase in vehicles' fuel efficiency for the first time in 32 years, make an historic commitment to American-grown biofuels, and invest in job training for 21st century “green collar” jobs in technology and science sectors.
"This common-sense law will help put us on the path to energy independence, ensuring that American innovation and ingenuity are used to tackle the most difficult issues of our generation," Klein said. "This law represents a new commitment to strengthening our national security, lowering energy costs, creating jobs, and reducing our impact on global warming. I stand with people across our country who feel the great urgency of this issue - this is the calling of our time"
The Energy Independence and Security Act also makes an unprecedented investment in marine renewable energy, which would tap the ocean's potential as a renewable energy resource. $50 million a year has been authorized for ocean energy research and ocean energy facilities will be made eligible for renewable energy production tax credits. Klein has been a leader on highlighting the potential of marine renewable energy, hosting a briefing on ocean energy for Members of Congress in May, which featured scientists from Florida Atlantic University.
"With over 70 miles of coastline in Florida's 22nd district, our community businesses and research institutes will spearhead the country’s progress in ocean energy research,” said Klein. “I am looking forward to the day when we can generate enough energy to power one-third of Florida through the current of the Gulf Stream. This new law makes that possible."
