OVER $13 MILLION FOR LOCAL PROJECTS

Washington, DC -- Congressman Ron Klein (FL-22) announced that Florida's 22nd district will receive over $13 million in local funding in the recently passed Congressional spending bill.

"I was also proud to bring home over $13 million in federal funds to benefit the people of FL-22.  The projects that will be funded range from technology for law enforcement to science education programs, and both Palm Beach and Broward counties will benefit tremendously," Klein said.  "It was certainly encouraging to work with all of my South Florida colleagues as well as both Florida Senators to ensure that the people of South Florida get their fair share."

Klein's funded projects include:

Boca Raton

The City of Boca Raton will receive $343,000 to establish a multi-modal transportation program, which would use the new Tri-Rail station as a regional transportation hub, and funding would allow for the acquisition of shuttle vehicles for shuttle service to educational campuses, employment centers, the community hospital, and shopping and entertainment centers helping to reduce traffic, parking demands, and improve economic vitality.

The City of Boca Raton will receive $980,000 for modifications to I-95 interchange access points at Yamato Road and construction of a new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard. This will ease congestion on roadways that are currently operating at capacity or overcapacity at the current time.

Boynton Beach

The City of Boynton Beach will receive $294,000 for an educational facility for emergency response teams.

Broward County

Broward County will receive $492,000 for beach renourishment and shore protection.

Broward County/Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Agency

Broward County and the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Agency will jointly receive $245,000 for the Downtown Transit Circulator Streetscapes.  The funding would be used for enhancements to existing lane configurations, wider sidewalks, landscaping, hardscape, lighting, street furniture, crosswalks and shade trees.  The Streetscape is being applied along the Circulator alignment and the approaches to the system.

City of Coconut Creek

The City of Coconut will receive $200,000 to provide structural hardening of the Public Works Administrative and Fleet Services Buildings at the City of Coconut Creek Government Center.

Covenant House, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Covenant House Florida will receive $195,000 to expand their "Moms & Babies Program" for expectant and parenting teens and young adults, providing pre/post natal care counseling, proper nutrition and health and parenting education classes.  Participants are also encouraged to take the GED, enroll in job and vocational training, and participate in community service involvement.

City of Deerfield Beach

The City of Deerfield Beach will receive $738,000 for Beach renourishment and shore protection.

City of Fort Lauderdale

The City of Fort Lauderdale will receive $93,000 to promote safety by installing a system of ten cameras in strategic locations throughout the City.  The system is meant to deter and detect crime, as well as assist in culprit apprehension.

Town of Jupiter

The Town of Jupiter will receive $399,500 to allow northern Palm Beach County police agencies to tie into a federally developed network to share criminal information across traditional jurisdictional boundaries.

Port of Palm Beach, Town of Palm Beach, and Palm Beach County

The Army Corps of Engineers will be directed to spend $2,862,456 for annual maintenance dredging and implementation of advanced maintenance of Palm Beach Harbor/Lake Worth Inlet.

The Army Corps of Engineers will use $107,256 for a feasibility study to assess channel deepening at the Lake Worth Inlet.

Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

The Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea will receive $492,200 to install a complete sewer system for the North Beach neighborhood.

Palm Beach Community College

Palm Beach Community College will receive $316,000 to integrate a new technology-based method of instruction and interaction into classrooms and labs to improve instructor-to-student and student-to-instructor communication, and provides real-time results on student learning.

PalmTran

Palm Tran will receive $735,000 to expand the fleet of buses in order to provide Palm Beach County residents half hour peak service to meet commuter rail connections

City of Parkland

The City of Parkland will receive $245,000 to construct riverside multiuse trailways from Holmberg Rd to NW 81st St.

City of Pompano Beach

The City of Pompano Beach will receive $446,000 to switch the City's communication to digital from analog, thereby enhancing the communications between Local and State Public Safety Departments.

City of Riviera Beach

The City of Riviera Beach will receive $94,000 purchase a broadband wireless data communication system.

South Florida Science Museum (Dekelbaum Science Center), West Palm Beach, FL

The South Florida Science Museum (Dekelbaum Science Center) will receive $316,000 for education and outreach programming.

Intracoastal Waterway

The Florida Inland Navigation District will receive $3,739,200 for maintenance dredging in the Intracoastal Waterway in the vicinities of Ponce de Leon Inlet and Jupiter Inlet.

The bill also includes much needed funding for regional FEMA offices to help state and local governments prepare for and respond to disasters. Additionally, the bill directed FEMA to maintain Florida’s critical long-term recovery office as long as necessary in order to respond to issues surrounding the 2004 hurricanes that struck the State. Klein and the Florida delegation recently wrote a letter to the conferees of the Homeland Security Appropriations Act to ask that the conferees include language in the legislation to require FEMA to keep the office open in order to cope with future disasters.
