U.S. REP. RON KLEIN RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT BUSH’S DECISION TO SEND MORE TROOPS TO IRAQ

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (FL-22) issued the following statement in response to President Bush’s announcement Wednesday night that he plans to send more troops to Iraq:

“Tonight President Bush made it clear that he plans to send 20,000 more troops to Iraq, a decision opposed by many military experts, Republicans and Democrats in Congress, the American people, Florida families, and myself. Throwing more money and more troops at the situation without providing a system of accountability will only further compound our problems in Iraq. And so far, I’ve seen no real proof that a system of accountability exists.

“I believe the best course of action is to enact a strategic plan devised by our military experts for a phased withdrawal of our troops, while at the same time providing the utmost protection to our men and women who are serving.”

Klein also voted earlier Wednesday evening in support of a bipartisan bill that increases the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour over a two year period, benefiting nearly 13 million American workers and their families. The bill, H.R. 2, will next go to the Senate, where it is expected to pass overwhelmingly, and then to the President, who is expected to sign it into law.
