Economic Summit Brings Local Leaders Together
On October 8, 2007 at LaRoche College in McCandless, Congressman Altmire brought local business leaders, academics, and policy makers together to discuss ways to create and expand economic opportunity in western Pennsylvania. The summit included panel discussions on preparing local students for the workforce, helping small businesses grow, and building on the region’s advantages in health care and technology.

Shaler Event Connects Seniors with Affordable Prescription Drug Coverage

Pennsylvania Department of Aging Secretary Nora Dowd Eisenhower joined Congressman Altmire to inform North Hills residents about the state’s prescription drug program (PACE/PACENET) and the federal government’s program (Medicare Part D).  They also answered questions about other available health care programs. Eligible residents were able to sign up for coverage at the event.  

Berkeley HillsHelping Local Volunteer Fire Departments
Congressman Altmire helped local volunteer fire departments obtain $360,000 in federal grants.  Last year, volunteer fire departments in Berkeley Hills, Peebles, Renton, Sewickley, and West Deer Township received grant funding that will help their departments purchase new equipment.

Helping the Ross Township Police Department Purchase New Equipment
Congressman Jason Altmire secured $400,000 in federal funding for the Ross Township Police to help it purchase new communications equipment. This upgraded technology will make police operations more efficient and improve public safety in Ross Township and the surrounding areas. Town Hall Held in Natrona Heights

On February 5, 2008, Congressman Altmire held a town hall at the Harrison Township Council Chambers in Natrona Heights. At the town hall, he answered questions from local residents about the economy, health care, education, energy, and the war in Iraq. 

AK GroundbreakingAlle-Kiski Medical Center’s Emergency Department Expansion
In last year’s budget, Congressman Jason Altmire secured $365,000 for Alle-Kiski Medical Center to help construct a new emergency department at its Natrona Heights campus. AKMC houses the only emergency department in the Alle-Kiski Valley and is undertaking its largest construction project in more than 20 years in order to meet rising patient demands. When completed, the new emergency department will more than double its current size and will be able to serve 40,000 patients annually. Health Care Town Hall Meeting in Plum Borough
On August 22, 2007, Congressman Altmire and a representative from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare met with local residents to discuss potential changes to and answer questions about federal retirement and health care programs.

Improving the Plum Senior Community Center

Congressman Altmire secured $300,000 in federal funding for the Plum Senior Community Center to help renovate and expand its facility. Advancing the Allegheny Valley Commuter Rail Project
As part of the FY08 budget, Congressman Jason Altmire secured $500,000 in federal funding for a study that will lay the groundwork for the Allegheny Valley Commuter Rail. The transit project will provide passenger rail service to connect residents of Westmoreland County and the Allegheny-Kiski Valley with downtown Pittsburgh, and eventually the Pittsburgh International Airport.
