Congresswoman Hirono Visits Maui County Veterans Council

KAHULUI, MAUI— Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai‘i) today met with members of the Maui County Veterans Council to discuss the latest updates on the operation of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Maui Community Based Outpatient Clinic.  This past July, the VA hired a full-time doctor and a full-time physician’s assistant in response to calls by island veterans that their medical needs were not being met.

“After spending time with our Maui military veterans and talking with them about their unique situation, I get a strong sense of relief and satisfaction that the work being done to improve the Maui Clinic is heading in the right direction,” said Hirono.  “However, these men also made it clear that our country still has work to do in supporting our veterans.  They impressed upon me the need to more effectively reach out to veterans who have fallen through the cracks.  I will continue to work with the Council and other veterans groups to make sure that veterans receive the assistance they have earned.”

Today’s meeting comes on the heels of a report released today by the veterans group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American (IAVA) that gives Congresswoman Hirono an A-Plus for her work on Capitol Hill over the past year.  The Congressional Report Card notes her strong voting record on veterans’ issues and her co-sponsorship of the New G.I. Bill.
