Congresswoman Hirono Announces Federal Funding for

Program to Battle Heart Disease and Strokes in Hawai’i

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai’i) today announced a $330,113 U.S. Department of Health & Human Services grant for the planning and creation of a statewide comprehensive program aimed at addressing the growing cases of heart disease and stroke in Hawai’i.

According to the State Department of Health, heart disease is the leading killer in Hawai’i.

Stroke ranks 3rd.

(Cancer, collectively, ranks 2nd)

The funding will be used to hire a program coordinator, program specialist, part-time epidemiologist, and a part-time clerk.  The funds will also go toward the purchasing of equipment needed to support the staff.

This program will focus on those island populations most affected by these deadly diseases.
