Congresswoman Hirono Announces Funding for Native Hawaiian Housing

Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to Receive $8.4 Million

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono announced today that the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has been approved for a Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant in the amount of $8,377,770.

This funding can be used for various eligible affordable housing activities, including new construction, acquisition, modernization or rehabilitation of rental or owner-occupied housing, housing services, crime prevention and safety.

Congresswoman Hirono said, "This is a significant federal commitment to helping meet the housing needs of Native Hawaiians. Continuing to support Native Hawaiian achievement and advancement is in the best interest of all of the people of our state and indeed our nation."

The Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant is a program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA).

Congresswoman Hirono has been a vocal advocate for Native Hawaiian housing. Earlier this month when the U.S. House of Representatives reauthorized NAHASDA, and also in July, she helped defeat Republican efforts to eliminate the Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant program.
