CONGRESSWOMAN MAZIE HIRONO RESPONDS TO CLOSING OF ALOHA AIRLINES’ PASSENGER SERVICE

HONOLULU, HI.—The following statements were released, today, by Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (2nd-HI), regarding the announcement by Aloha Airlines that it will be shutting down its inter-island and transpacific passenger flight operations, tomorrow, Monday, March 31, 2008:

“Today’s news comes as a huge disappointment and brings great sadness to our entire island state. Above all, I am deeply concerned about the 1,900 Aloha Airlines employees who are losing their jobs.”

“I continue to monitor the situation closely.  I am a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and just a few days ago, I discussed the issues surrounding Aloha Airlines’ bankruptcy with Committee Chairman, Jim Oberstar, who had been visiting the islands on a fact-finding tour.
Chairman Oberstar expressed his support for Aloha Airlines, and the entire Aloha Airlines Ohana.”

“I will continue to explore all actions and options available at the federal level, as well as support the state legislature’s ongoing efforts to find a viable way to keep Aloha Airlines in business.  Coming together in a time of need is what makes Hawaii so special.  And now, we need to come to the aid of these displaced Aloha Airlines employees.”
