The Illegal Immigration Enforcement and Social Security Protection Act of 2007
H.R. 98

Congressman Dreier and TJ Bonner at Press Conference Discussing Illegal Immigration

As we all know, the porous southern border with Mexico remains a serious national security vulnerability. Legal immigration programs should no longer be undermined by those who choose to break the rules. Economic opportunity lures many illegal immigrants across the border because too many employers continue to illegally employ them. In the effort to combat illegal immigration, Congressman Dreier authored bipartisan legislation, with the help of T.J. Bonner, President of the National Border Patrol Council, to secure our borders and crack down on the hiring of illegal immigrants.

Specifically, H.R. 98, the Illegal Immigration Enforcement and Social Security Protection Act of 2007, will dramatically reduce employment of illegal immigrants by:

See Also:

  • Improving the integrity of Social Security cards by including a digitized photo, as well as an electronic signature strip which will be used by employers to instantaneously verify a prospective employee's eligibility to work in the United States, either through a toll-free number or electronic card-reader;
  • Increasing penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants or fail to verify their employment eligibility by increasing fines to $50,000, applying jail sentences of up to 5 years per occurrence, and requiring the employer to pay for the deportation costs; and
  • Adding 10,000 new Department of Homeland Security personnel whose sole responsibility will be to enforce employer compliance and prosecute those who employ illegal immigrants.

H.R. 98 has been included in the border security legislation being championed by House Republicans, H.R. 2954, the Secure Borders FIRST (For Integrity, Reform, Safety and anti-Terrorism) Act.

By eliminating job opportunities for illegal immigrants we can eliminate their desire to illegally enter our country.
