Clarke Elected Congressional Black Caucus Whip

Washington, DC -- Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-11) was elected as Whip for the Congressional Black Caucus for the 111th Congress. Congresswoman Clarke made the following remarks:
“As the youngest black woman serving in Congress, I am honored to be chosen by my esteemed colleagues to serve as Whip for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for this upcoming Congress. I thank outgoing Chairwoman Kilpatrick and the rest of the leaders of the CBC in the 110th Congress for their strong leadership and steadfast commitment to addressing the needs of people of color and the disadvantaged both in the US and throughout the global community, which served as a model for me during my first term.”
“The Whip helps to develop strategy, count votes and to gather and distribute information among CBC members. In my new role, I will work with our newly-elected Chairwoman Barbara Lee and the rest of our new leadership to garner support for key legislation and bring members of the CBC together in support of a strong Black Caucus and Democratic agenda.”
The CBC was formed 40 years ago by thirteen black Members of Congress, including my predecessor, the Honorable Shirley Chisholm, and our colleagues Chairmen Conyers and Rangel. Those founding members united to speak with a single voice for change. I hope that 40 years after our Caucus’ founding, with America’s first black president, I can use my position as Whip to continue our Caucus’ legacy as the conscience of the Congress. I look forward to working with my colleagues in what is sure to be a productive and historic 111th Congress.”
