LOEBSACK DISCUSSES FORMALDEHYDE TEST RESULTS WITH FEMA ADMINISTRATOR

Washington, D.C , Nov 14 - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after speaking with FEMA Administrator David Paulison regarding the test results released today on the levels of formaldehyde found in FEMA provided mobile homes.

“In the wake of the devastating floods, the safety and well-being of flood victims is paramount.  After learning that temporary housing units provided by FEMA may pose health risks due to unsafe levels of formaldehyde, I worked with FEMA Administrator David Paulison to ensure re-testing would be conducted.

“Today the results from some of these tests have been released by FEMA.  I remain concerned that the levels of formaldehyde were found to be slightly above what is deemed safe by the State of Iowa.  I have spoken with Administrator Paulison today about the results, and he assured me that while the safety of residents is not in danger, a team of experts from Iowa Department of Health will be sent into the community to review the test results and discuss actions that can be taken to reduce the current formaldehyde levels.

“Every disaster victim must feel safe and secure in their temporary place of housing, and if anyone feels their health may be at risk in light of these results I encourage them to contact FEMA to request alternate housing.  As always, my staff is also available to assist anyone seeking assistance, residents can contact my office toll free at 866.914.IOWA.”
