Disaster Relief

In the last several years, many Americans have had their lives adversely impacted by hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, earthquakes, wildfires and other natural disasters. Since coming to Congress, Representative Carson has sponsored and supported a series of initiatives that have provided much needed assistance to those individuals who have experienced and endured a natural disaster.

SUPPORTING DISASTER VICTIMS >> When Indianapolis was hit by tornadoes and heavy flooding in June 2008, Congressman Carson worked to ensure that storm victims received the help that they needed to recover. Together with the Indiana delegation, he supported the State of Indiana’s request for disaster recognition of Marion County and 43 other Indiana counties.

At Congressman Carson’s encouragement, $2.65 billion in funding was added to the 2008 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act to assist Midwestern states recovering from tornadoes and flooding. Additionally, Congressman Carson supports the Midwest Storm Victims Relief Act, a bill that would further increase the funds available to Indiana for disaster relief and the rebuilding of damaged neighborhoods.

PROTECTING AGAINST FUTURE FLOODING >> Congressman Carson recently secured $5.3 million in federal funding for the Indianapolis North Flood Control Damage Reduction Project.  This funding will be used to finish a floodwall in the flood prone area of northern Indianapolis.

PROVIDING CONTINUED RELIEF TO HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS >> In 2005, New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast was devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Congressman Carson is especially mindful of the ongoing needs of our family and friends in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and other Gulf Coast states. To support these disaster victims he has co-sponsored legislation that will retrain 100,000 displaced Gulf Coast workers and put them to work rebuilding areas destroyed by hurricanes.

Additionally, in a show of support for the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and surrounding areas, Congressman Carson voted for the passage of legislation that provides an additional $500 million to Gulf Coast communities for the repairing and rebuilding of schools damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
