About Nick

Congressman Nick Lampson and his family have a rich history in Texas's 22nd Congressional District. Both his maternal and paternal grandparentsThe Lampsons came to Texas from Italy nearly one hundred years ago. They settled in Stafford, Fort Bend County, where they raised their children on adjacent farms and were founding members of a church that still stands today. Congressman Lampson's parents grew up, met and married in Fort Bend County. He and his siblings spent many hours on their grandparents' farms. There they picked cotton and okra, and learned the importance of working together as a team, as a family and as a community larger than themselves. Congressman Lampson knows that family and community are the real backbone of America. He has been married to his wife, Susan for 35 years. They have two grown daughters, and three grandchildren.

Early Years

Nicholas Valentino Lampson, is one of six children born to a welder and a homemaker. At age twelve, Congressman Lampson’s father passed away, and young Nick began sweeping floorsNick Lampson and Family to augment the family income. Their income was also supplemented by Social Security, which gave Congressman Lampson's mother $19 dollars per month, so long as young Nick and his siblings stayed in school. During those trying times, the extra money helped keep the Lampson family together, and ever since, Congressman Lampson has been a steadfast advocate for protecting Social Security for those who need it most.

Although Congressman Lampson’s mother, Nancy Jebbia Lampson, was only able to attend school through the fifth grade, she was a firm believer in a good education.  She made certain all six of her children graduated from college with at least one degree, and she received her GED at the ripe young age of eighty. Mrs. Lampson’s tenacity and encouragement instilled a great legacy of education in the entire Lampson family. Congressman Lampson himself is a former high school science teacher. His wife, Susan, is a special education teacher and his daughters are both board-certified teachers.

Education will always be a top concern for Congressman Lampson because it means so much to his family. He fights hard for public education and against efforts to get rid of essential programs like Head Start that assist early childhood education. He also supports making college tuition fully tax deductible so more kids can reach college, and bringing down the cost of loans. Nick Lampson and Family

Public Servant

For nearly two decades, Lampson served as a popular voter registrar and tax assessor. He modernized the office and improved collection rates. In 1996, Lampson was elected to his first term to the United States Congress.

Congressman Lampson serves the 22nd Congressional District with only one priority -- the people who are living, working, and raising their families here. He always puts his constituents first, and many agree.  A 2002 Houston Chronicle survey showed that Congressman Lampson had taken more constituent cases than any other Houston area representative.

Congressional Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children

Congressman Lampson is well known for his efforts on issues of child safety. Just months into his first term in office, in 1997, a family in his district suffered a terrible tragedy. A 12-year-old girl from Friendswood was abducted and found murdered two weeks later.  Congressman Lampson was so moved by the family's courage and the caring response of the community in banding together to search for the child, that he established the first-ever bipartisan Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, which now numbers more than 130 members, with near equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats. Congressman Lampson has been recognized by John Walsh, host of America’s Most Wanted and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children for his work to protect kids.

With the power of the Caucus behind him, the former high school science teacher has fought overtime in Congress to help families protect their children and aid communities and law enforcement searching for missing children. He has sponsored legislation to fund law enforcement efforts to stop child pornography and exploitation on the Internet.  The Caucus also helped to create the national AMBER Alert system.
Congressman Lampson was a leader in launching Project Safe Place in Harris and Galveston Counties, a project bringing businesses together to aid children in trouble and in need a safe place to go.

Fiscal Responsibility

Congressman Lampson knows borrowing from our children and grandchildren is not sound budget policy, and he consistently votes to reduce our nation’s debt and deficits. Today, Congressman Lampson continues to work on behalf of the people of Congressional District 22. He will always put us first.
