MIFA Meals on Wheels
Friday, 28 November 2008

On Wednesday, November 26, I took the opportunity to deliver meals to needy families in the 9th District through the Memphis Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) "Meals on Wheels" program.  Before I went out, I met with members of the MIFA staff and we spoke with reporters about the need to donate and volunteer this holiday season especially in light of the economic crisis.  We had a great day and I enjoyed meeting the families along my route.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact MIFA at (901) 527-0208 or the Memphis Food Bank at (901) 527-0841.  We have a new photo gallery of my day up HERE.

Report from the Lame Duck Session
Friday, 21 November 2008

This week, members of Congress returned to Washington for organizational meetings and to continue work on legislation to revive our economy, create and save jobs, and help Americans struggling to make ends meet.  I was very pleased that the Senate passed H.R. 6867, which will extend unemployment insurance benefits for seven weeks, and for 13 weeks in states where the jobless rate is above 6 percent.  I strongly supported this legislation when it passed the House in September and fought along with Congressman Charlie Rangel (NY-15) to include it in the first economic stimulus package back in the spring.  The President signed the bill this morning, and it will go into effect immediately.

Honoring Our Troops This Veterans Day
Monday, 10 November 2008
Each November, Americans come together to remember our veterans who have served the nation, often at great risk, and those who we have lost for the cause of our freedom.  The debt owed to 24 million American veterans is immeasurable.  Their sacrifices, and those of our military families, are freedom’s foundation.  Indeed, without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and their families, our country would not stand so strong, shine so brightly and live so freely.

This Week: Reexamining Economic Solutions
Wednesday, 05 November 2008
In the most compelling proof yet that the U.S. economy is in recession, the Commerce Department reported yesterday that economic growth contracted by 0.3 percent during the third quarter of this year and personal consumption fell by the greatest rate in almost three decades: 3.1 percent.  America's families and businesses are facing an economic crisis, and the Congress will continue to fight for real solutions to rebuild our economy, create good-paying jobs here at home, make us more competitive in the 21st century global economy, and promote consumer and investor confidence.  Very soon, the Congress will reconvene to consider an economic recovery package. I believe we need a stimulus and I plan to follow this legislation closely.

This Week on Capitol Hill
Friday, 24 October 2008
It was another tough week in the financial sector, but I’m happy to report that there was some positive news for the 9th District this week from Capitol Hill.  We received over $5 million in grants, and President Bush signed an important railroad bill which could have a very positive impact on our community.
