Working For Maine

Energy and Commerce

Representative Allen serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which has jurisdiction over legislation related to health care, energy, telecommunications, and the environment.

Congressman Allen is a member of the Health Subcommittee, and is founder and Co-Chair of the House Affordable Medicines Task Force and the Congressional Air Medical Caucus and is Co-Chair of the Long-Term Care Caucus.

In the 110th Congress, Congressman Allen will advance legislation to improve the health care system in the United States, including the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Health care costs are a huge and growing burden on Maine businesses, and America’s continued competitiveness in the global economy depends on reforming our health care system. Tom Allen plans to work with Democratic and Republican members of the committee to lower the cost of health care, reduce the ranks of the uninsured, and provide access to affordable prescription drugs.

Congressman Allen also serves on the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee, which oversees energy policy.  From this subcommittee, Tom is working to enact a comprehensive national energy policy that decreases our reliance on fossil fuels, encourages innovation and conservation, and is integrated with sound environmental policy. He is also working in the Subcommittee to strengthen the landmark Clean Air Act and to reduce emissions that cause global climate change.

Tom also serves on the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee.  From his position on this Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over environmental issues, including clean water, brownfields and Superfund, solid waste, and hazardous materials, Tom Allen continues Maine’s legacy of leaders, including Senators Ed Muskie and George Mitchell, who fight for clean air and a healthy environment.

The Energy and Commerce Committee also has jurisdiction over telecommunications law. Maintaining the world’s most advanced telecommunications system is critical to Maine’s productivity and the competitiveness of our state’s economy. Congressman Allen remains committed to bridging the digital divide so every American has access to affordable broadband Internet service and communications technology.
