Statement on a Rescue Plan for the American Automobile Industry

Portland, Maine (Monday, November 17, 2008)---U.S. Representative Tom Allen today issued the following statement regarding possible congressional action on a rescue package for the nation’s automobile industry:

“The automobile industry directly employs hundreds of thousands of Americans in good jobs.  Indirectly, it is responsible for millions more jobs in automobile sales and in businesses that supply and provide services to the auto industry.  Clearly, there is a national interest in preventing a catastrophic collapse of such an integral sector of the American economy.  Since there is no specific legislative proposal yet before Congress, I reserve judgment.  I will weigh the proposals that come before Congress, but my paramount concerns will be to shield American taxpayers from risk, enforce strict accountability from the companies, prevent excessive compensation for the executives responsible for bad decisions and redirect the industry toward a more competitive future.”
