Does the IRS owe me money?

Does the IRS owe you money?

Each year, due to glitches, loopholes, and address records that are not updated, the IRS is unable to deliver millions of dollars in tax refunds to thousands of people.  This year, millions are also missing their economic stimulus payments, and nearly 700 of those people live in Louisville.  Although the IRS makes public the names of people with unclaimed refunds, many taxpayers never become aware of the problem, due to red tape and bureaucracy.

Louisville's taxpayers work too hard to be denied the money they've earned, so I'm cutting through the red tape for our community.  If you think you are owed a refund and/or stimulus payment, just follow these steps to get the money you've earned.

1) Search for your name and zip code on this list.  If you find yours, you've got a refund waiting for you.

2) Find the amount of your refund by checking your records, contacting your tax preparer, or calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.  Economic stimulus claimants can call 1-866-234-2942 to check on a missing payment.

3) Click here to visit the IRS’s website to correct any error.

Once you've completed those three steps, you will immediately be eligible to receive your refund.
