Washington, Feb 12, 2007 -  As the House of Representatives prepares to debate a nonbinding resolution regarding the war in Iraq, Congressman John Shadegg (R-AZ), along with several of his Republican colleagues, issued a letter to the Chairwomen of the Progressive Caucus and the Out of Iraq Working Group. The letter was a direct appeal to the respective Chairs asking them to call on the Democrat leadership to open debate on the Iraq war resolution to BOTH Republicans and Democrats.

“It would be an insult to the democratic process if the many differing views on how best to further prosecute the war in Iraq were silenced,” said Shadegg. “After promising to make this Congress the most open and honest in history, Nancy Pelosi has effectively shut out both Republicans and Democrats from substantively debating the most important issue of our time.”

The letter comes on the heels of the Democrat leadership’s decision to further limit debate by backpedaling on their promise to allow a Republican alternative to the resolution. The letter was signed by a group of Republican House members with wide-ranging positions on the war in Iraq, including Congressmen Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Chris Shays (R-CT).

“By shutting out both Republicans and Democrats from this important debate, Nancy Pelosi has rendered the majority of Americans voiceless. If the members of the Progressive Caucus and the Out of Iraq Working Group believe that the United States should withdraw our troops from Iraq, then the Democrat leadership should allow them to help craft the legislation through an open amendment process,” Shadegg said.

Congressman Shadegg is the author of the Victory in Iraq Resolution.
