HERSETH SANDLIN STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF GENERAL SHINSEKI FOR SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

December 8, 2008, Washington, DC- Today, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin released the following statement today on the nomination of General Eric Shinseki for Secretary of Veterans Affairs:

“General Shinseki has a remarkable and distinguished record of service to his country, and I am pleased with his nomination. Whether as a combat soldier who survived life-threatening injuries in Vietnam, or as Chief of Staff of the Army, General Shinseki has demonstrated courage, patriotism and service to country. His understanding of the unique challenges facing our servicemembers and veterans has earned him the respect of fellow military leaders and veteran service organizations.

“As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee and as Chairwoman of the Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, I look forward to working with General Shinseki on several issues, including implementing the new veterans’ education program, reducing the claims backlog, and providing sufficient and timely funding for health care.”
