HERSETH SANDLIN ELECTED LEADER OF FISCALLY-CONSERVATIVE
BLUE DOG COALITION

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Today, Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin was elected as the Democratic Blue Dog Coalition’s Co-Chair for Administration in the 111th Congress. After serving as the Coalition’s Whip for the 110th Congress, Herseth Sandlin will lead the fiscally-conservative group of more than 50 members during the 111th. In addition to the election of Herseth Sandlin as the Co-Chair for Administration, the Blue Dogs also elected Congressman Baron Hill (D-IN) as Co-Chair for Policy and Congressman Charlie Melancon (D-LA) as Co-Chair for Communications.

“Blue Dogs believe in living within your means and balancing your budget – common sense values that are shared by most South Dakota families and businesses,” Herseth Sandlin said. “Over the last two years, the Blue Dogs made tremendous progress towards restoring fiscal responsibility by instituting new pay-as-you-go-rules and insisting on fiscal discipline. As we look ahead to the 111th Congress, the Blue Dogs will continue to be the fiscal watchdogs of the House of Representatives. South Dakotans expect their government to be responsive, effective and most of all, trustworthy and responsible when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. That’s what the Blue Dogs stand for and that’s what we will continue to focus on over the next two years.”

The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States by reassessing spending and revenue decisions, addressing entitlement reform and by tackling the record national debt and annual deficit.

As longtime deficit hawks, the Blue Dogs will continue to play a significant role as Congress and the administration work together to put the country back on a path to economic sustainability. The new slate of leaders will succeed Rep. Allen Boyd (D-FL), Rep. Dennis Moore (D-KS) and Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR) in their posts as co-chairs of the Coalition. Blue Dog by-laws require that the leadership team change every session of Congress so that the group’s focus continues to be the advancement of the larger Blue Dog movement rather than about a few individuals or personalities.
