Immediate Release Contact: Betsy Hart Funding will Support Advanced Placement Coursework in 30 Rural and High-Poverty School Districts Across South Dakota October 1, 2008-Today, Rep. Herseth Sandlin announced that Technology & Innovation in Education (TIE), administered by Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, is the recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Incentive Program Grant in the amount of $593,867. This grant will be used to expand opportunities for students in living in 30 rural and high-poverty districts in South to access and succeed in Advanced Placement coursework. “With the technology that is available for distance learning, there are limitless opportunities for ambitious young people in South Dakota to excel,” Rep. Herseth Sandlin said. “This funding will help encourage greater student participation and enhance resources available to teachers who support their efforts.” In collaboration with the South Dakota Department of Education, South Dakota Virtual School, and other partners, TIE will carry out this project to aid rural and high poverty schools in implementing plans to expand their Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings in English language arts, mathematics, and science. In addition to monetary incentives provided to students and teachers for above average performance on AP exams, the project will also provide extensive training and on-site coaching for teachers in grades 7 through 12 to support their implementation of an aligned, rigorous curriculum to prepare students for advanced coursework. ### |
