Statement on Yesterday's Indian Point Siren Failure
May 17, 2007
Washington, DC – Congressman John Hall (D-NY19) issued the following statement in response to the Indian Point nuclear power plants losing power to 26 emergency sirens (11 in Westchester County and 15 in Rockland County) yesterday afternoon due to severe weather:

"Yesterday’s siren failure adds to the growing litany of problems plaguing the Indian Point nuclear power plants.  The communities around Indian Point need to be assured that they'll be warned immediately about any safety incident at the plant, not just those mishaps that occur on sunny days.  This incident provides more justification for the NRC to move forward with its proposal to fine Entergy for not having a back up system in place, and is yet another example of why an Independent Safety Assessment needs to be conducted at Indian Point."

As of 2 p.m. today twelve sirens remain inoperable: 10 in Westchester County and 2 in Rockland County.
