How Will We Welcome Them Home?
As a community and individually, we ask this question as men and women from New Mexico return home from assignments overseas.
In World War II one in ten citizens served in uniform. In 2008 two in 1,000 citizens serve in uniform. Individuals and organizations are seeking ways to support those who serve in the military, veterans and their families.
Services are available, but the burden to find them too often rests upon the military members, veterans or their families. Services tend to operate in isolation. Needs vary—employment, education and training, mental health, disability, health care, family support and others. No one agency can meet the needs of these men and women.
I am pleased that a group of committed individuals came together to develop an easily accessible system of care for veterans, returning military members and their families.
With the distribution of the 1st Edition of the How Will We Welcome Them Home? Resource Directory, we are taking an important step to reduce barriers and increase knowledge.
I thank those who participated in this effort to support our military men and women, veterans and their families. I invite others who provide services or want to offer their services to veterans, military members and their families to contact my office to be added to the Resource Directory.
