BAKERSFIELD – This Friday, December 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., Congressman McCarthy will present local World War II Veteran Allen Frank Abbott, Jr. with medals he earned for his service and sacrifice during World War II. Additionally, this Sunday, December 7, 2008, Congressman McCarthy will speak at the Bakersfield National Cemetery Groundbreaking/Dedication Ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

What:
Congressman McCarthy will present Allen Frank Abbott, Jr. with medals he earned, but never received, for his service and sacrifice in World War II. Mr. Abbott will be presented the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 1 bronze star), the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the Navy Discharge Button, and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin (Ruptured Duck).
Medal Recipient Allen Frank Abbott, Jr. Bio:
Mr. Abbott is 88 years old and resides in Bakersfield. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 10, 1944 to January 17, 1946 during WWII aboard the ship the USS Concord CL-10 under Admiral Fletcher. His ship fired the last shot of WWII on the mainland of Japan, and he also participated in the signing of the peace treaty to end WWII.
Mr. Abbott and his wife Dorothy have been married for 69 years and still live in their first home, which they purchased in 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Abbott have two children, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

What:
Congressman McCarthy will speak at the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony for the new Bakersfield National Cemetery this Sunday. The ceremony will also include remarks by former Congressman Bill Thomas, Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs William F. Tuerk, and other officials, the unveiling of the dedication plaque, and military honors.
