MCNERNEY NABS SEAT ON POWERFUL ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE

December 10, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman McNerney (CA-11) officially secured a seat on the powerful Committee on Energy and Commerce of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Energy and Commerce Committee has a broad issue portfolio, including both energy policy and commerce issues, as the name would suggest, as well as healthcare and consumer affairs and protection.

Energy and Commerce is the House’s oldest standing committee and considered one of the most important.  Throughout its history, it has produced many pieces of landmark legislation.

“I’m thrilled to gain a seat on the Energy and Commerce Committee.  I’m anxious to delve into some of the committee’s issues, including the development of a new national energy policy that focuses on the use and production of renewable energy and addressing the need for affordable and accessible healthcare for all Americans,” McNerney said.

As a member of the Committee, Congressman McNerney will be able to use his 20-plus years of professional experience with wind and other forms of sustainable energy.  Rep. McNerney’s new position became official this afternoon after a vote in the Steering and Policy Committee, which considers committee assignment, and then a ratifying vote by the entire Democratic Caucus.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) will chair the committee, and Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) will serve as the ranking Republican member on the committee.
