Mitchell Statement on Veterans Day

Expresses gratitude to service members and their families for sacrifices during time of war

SCOTTSDALE – In honor of Veterans Day tomorrow, U.S. Rep. Harry E. Mitchell, a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, made the following statement in recognition of veterans across Arizona and the nation.

“On this Veterans Day, let us all take time to honor the millions of brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect our freedom, as well as those fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for our country.

I also ask that you reach out to the families of veterans and let them know how grateful we all are for their sacrifices. We should do everything we can to ease that always heavy and often unfair burden that they have borne during this time of war.

Veterans have kept their promise to serve our nation. We must always keep our promise to assist and protect them once they return home. That is why the 110th Congress, with my support, has moved to improve healthcare services by passing the largest funding increases in history for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and to increase educational and economic opportunities through a dramatically upgraded G.I. Bill.

We have also pressed the VA to do more significant outreach to veterans who may be silently suffering from health problems like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. In keeping with the holiday, local TV stations have been asked to air a public service announcement to make our veterans aware of the healthcare services available to them through the VA.

We have made progress, but there is still much work to do. The special honor we pay our veterans today is no more we should do every day. They deserve no less.”
