CONGRESSMAN KINGSTON ANNOUNCES NOMINEES TO UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMIES

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) announces that 16 students in the First Congressional District of Georgia have received nominations to United States service academies.  The students were interviewed for consideration into the Class of 2013 by Congressman Kingston’s Military Academy Board.   Interviews were conducted at the Inn at Blueberry Plantation in Alma on November 24, 2008.

The nominated students are:

Ben Peterson of Savannah is a senior at Benedictine Military School and was chosen as principle nominee to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Ben is a brigade commander, a cadet colonel and is captain of the Civil Air Patrol.  He has volunteered his time at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and at the Savannah Optimist Club.  He is the son of Dee and Jeffery King.

Marc Stanley of Richmond Hill is a senior at Richmond Hill High School and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Marc is a member of the RHHS quiz bowl team, cross country team, and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).  He is also employed with at the Richmond Hill Recreation Center.  He is the son of Elizabeth Stanley-Jones and Ballard Jones III.

Vincent Curley of Savannah is a senior at Saint Andrews School and was chosen as a primary candidate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Vincent is a member of the Boy Scouts and is an Eagle Scout in progress.  He is a member of the SAS football, basketball, baseball and track teams.  He is the son of Judith and Robert Curley.

Nicholas Duesler of Savannah is a senior at Savannah Arts Academy and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  Nicholas is a member of the National Honors Society, the theater club, and swim team.  He is the son of Barbara and Stephen Duesler.

Toni Paruso of Savannah is a senior at Savannah Arts Academy and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  Toni is the president of her school’s National Honors Society chapter, a member of Beta Club and captain of the school swim team.  She is the daughter of Polly and Patrick Paruso.

Kyle DuBose of St. Marys is a senior at Camden County High School and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Kyle is president of Senior Beta Club, a member of the CCHS Student Council and a member of the CCHS band.  He also holds a black belt in Karate.  He is the son of Sheila DuBose-Smith and Harry Lee DuBose, Jr.

Joshua Rodgers of Hinesville is a senior at First Presbyterian Christian Academy and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  He is a member of the FPCA band, Spanish club, Chess club, Interact club and the FPCA golf, tennis, baseball, basketball and soccer teams.  He is the son of Jerri and Joseph Rodgers.

Richard Baker of Kingsland is a senior at Camden County High School and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  Richard is a member of NJROTC and performs community service within the NJROTC such as highway cleanup and food drives.  He is also a member of the CCHS Academic Team.  He is the son of Minitie and Jay Baker.

Brockmon Cyphers of Brunswick is a senior at Heritage Christian Academy and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  Brock is a member of the HCA basketball and baseball teams and was selected as a member of Glynn Youth Leadership.  He is the son of Leigh and Arthur Cyphers, Jr.

Shawn Sororian is a cadet at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina and was chosen as a principle nominee to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.  Shawn is a member of the Cordelo Rangers and the American Society of Civil Engineering.  He is the son of Afsaneh and Fred Sororian.

John Johnson of Richmond Hill is a senior at Richmond Hill High School and was chosen as a principal nominee to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and a competing alternate to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  He was also chosen as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  He is a member of the RHHS baseball team, Math team, Beta Club and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).  He is employed at Royal Ace Hardware.  He is the son of Charles Johnson.

Cody Waterman of Hinesville is a senior at Liberty County High School and was chosen as a principal nominee to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Cody is captain of the LCHS varsity soccer team, a member of LCHS Interact club, and a Bread Basket volunteer.  He is the son of Tammy and Gregg Waterman.

Mitchell McKnight of Ft. Stewart is a freshman at the United States Military Academy Prep School and was chosen as a competing alternate to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.  Mitchell excelled in JROTC, obtained the level of Eagle Scout and participated in football, track and soccer.  He is the son of Christine and Mark McKnight.

Joseph Altomare of Savannah is a senior at H.V. Jenkins High School and was chosen as competing alternate to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Joseph is a member of the HVJHS baseball team, active in his church’s youth group, and enjoys fishing, hunting and skeet shooting.  He is the son of Deborah and Nicholas Altomare.

Colin Barnes of Savannah is a student at New Mexico Military Institute and was chosen as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Colin is a member of the NMMA Color Guard, a member of the Media Team, and writes stories for his local newspaper.  He is the son of Kelly Burke and Stephen Barnes.

Carey Harriott, Jr. of Savannah is a senior at Benedictine Military School and was chosen as a nominee to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  He is member of the Army JROTC, BMS yearbook staff, and serves as athletic trainer for the BMS football team.  He volunteers his time by doing lawn maintenance at St. James Catholic School and has been involved in his community’s annual Relay for Life.  He is the son of Alesia and Carey Harriott.

“This year’s students are an outstanding group of young people and should be commended for their dedication; it takes a tremendous amount of hard work to achieve their level of success,” said Congressman Kingston.  “I am proud to see the leadership qualities and enthusiasm displayed by these young men and women and wish them all well in their future endeavors.”

The United States service academies will announce formal appointments for the class of 2013 next spring.
