Housing Our Homeless Veterans

On Tuesday morning, I had the honor of cutting a ribbon at a facility in my Congressional District that will provide housing for homeless veterans. On any given night in the United States, 200,000 veterans are homeless. These are brave men and women who made great sacrifices and risked their lives to defend our country. As a response, my colleague, Mr. Green from Texas, introduced H.R. 3329, the Homes for Heroes Act. This act will expand housing assistance and supportive services for homeless veterans through a $200 million a year assistance program through The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in addition to 20,000 rental housing vouchers available to homeless veterans and their families.

This bill will ensure that housing assistance will continue for the veterans’ families, even in the event of the veteran’s death. HUD will be required to submit an annual report in order to ensure that the housing needs of these homeless veterans are met, and that an appropriate allocation is maintained. I support this bill enthusiastically, and I am hoping my colleagues will join me. This bill continues my policy of honoring our country’s veterans and making sure that providing for veterans remains a focal point of our new direction in Congress.

Dear Congressman Ryan: Eversince I read about homeless veterans in the Sunday July 16,2006 Vindicator article, it has bothered me that something wasn't being done for them. They deserve everything we can give them plus more, yet we treat prison inmates better than we do our returning heroes. I have only one question, What can I do to help them? Take care of yourself and all veterans coming back from both wars(it seems like Afghanistan has been forgotten)who deserve a better life than what America is giving them. The United States needs to repay our debt to them. Thank you for your time and your good work.

I enjoy your blogs and have seen some of your floor speeches. Please let me know if you ever need anything, you are the kind of Democrat this country needs. I hope you run for higher office one day.

Yes, the least we can do is support our veterans in their time of need.

Tim, you make me wish I lived in Ohio. You get up and when you speak about the truths of our current socioeconomic and political system it makes me want to rise out of my chair.

I truly hope that at some point you put some real thought into candidacy for the presidency in your political career. The constitution grants so many implied powers to congress but in the post-new-deal era you know as well as I do that presidential influence on public opinion in the age of mass media has become exponentially more powerful.

It's obvious that you have a strong vision for where we're going as a country and it's refreshing to see focus where it belongs: on the issues and not on whatever distraction the mass media catches our collective attention with from moment to moment.

You carry firmly on your shoulders the hopes and dreams of so many young Americans who are wrought with distress at our government's failure to interact peaceably with the world at large and keep our constitutionally binding treaties and agreements with the rest of the world.

Americans are SO frowned upon because of our current foreign policy that as we move closer and closer to the eventuality of a global economy we can only look in despair at where we're headed.

Please please please continue to stand up and fight for what you believe in. If you ever have doubts along the way just go to Youtube and type in your name in the search field and read the comments of today's youth at our shared anger of the state of the world.

You give me hope that this system hasn't completely failed us and I hope that when you look in the mirror in the morning that you feel an incredible swell of pride for what you've already accomplished on this road.

We're behind you, Tim.

I spent 6 years in the N.Mexico National Guard and they tell me I have not earned any veterns benefits. No college tuition nor any medical assistance. As far a homeless veterns, you have millions of acres of National Forests that I may say are burning to the ground in a daily fashion. My suggestions are give every veteran and homeless person 100 acres of National Forest land and let them lumber some trees and build some homes. And also they will need to employee several workers to help with these projects would put millions of Americans back to work.

This is a better way to spend money than bailing out rich people
