U.S. REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS WELCOMES U.S. REP. HARRY MITCHELL TO BLUE DOG COALITION

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords issued the following statement today after the announcement that her friend and fellow Arizonan, U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell of Tempe, will join the Blue Dog Coalition.
For the past 13 years, the Blue Dog Coalition has represented a force of moderation and fiscal responsibility in the U.S. House of Representatives. This group of moderate and conservative Democrats has fought to hold the line on government spending and guard against the reckless expansion of the federal deficit. As a proud member of the coalition for the past two years, I know that achieving these goals during this time of economic uncertainty has not been easy. But I also know that working toward them is more important than ever. My long-time friend and colleague, Harry Mitchell, shares this view, and that is why I am pleased to welcome him as one of six new members of the Blue Dog Coalition. Harry and I worked closely together in the Arizona Legislature to forge practical solutions to the problems confronting our state. We adopted the same approach as freshmen members of the 110th Congress. And we will continue down this path when the 111th Congress convenes in January.
