Pelosi Expands Van Hollen Leadership Responsibilities
Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that Congressman Chris Van Hollen of Maryland will serve in an expanded leadership role as Assistant to the Speaker focusing on policy issues and incumbent retention.
Van Hollen will also serve a second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). The 2008 election cycle was the first time in the history of a party that won a majority in a wave election went on to win another wave election.
“Following the historic second House wave election and the election of President-elect Barack Obama, there is no better choice for Assistant to the Speaker and DCCC Chairman than Chris Van Hollen,” Pelosi said. “Chris Van Hollen is a first-rate thinker and political strategist who knows the policy, politics, and people that are essential to House Leadership successfully developing and executing our agenda for change with the Caucus and the incoming Obama Administration.
“As DCCC Chairman, Chris Van Hollen was the maestro of this year’s historic election. He is uniquely positioned to lead House Democrats’ official incumbent retention efforts and help our new Members succeed. As DCCC Chairman next cycle, Chris will provide the continuous leadership needed for the more than 30 new Members of the Democratic Caucus and the challenging mid-term election ahead of us.”
