Shelby Announces $240,000 for Auburn University

November 21, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Services has awarded $240,000 to Auburn University.  Researchers at Auburn will use this funding to improve the detection of bacteria in our food supply.

“The United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world, but we must continue to improve our inspection and response capabilities,” said Shelby.  “This important funding will enable Auburn’s researchers to develop a scientific system that will rapidly detect the bacteria cells of certain food-borne pathogens.  The results of this research will be critical to scientists’ efforts to significantly reduce or eliminate the threat of food-borne illnesses.”
