Shelby Announces $340,000 for Black Belt Nature and Heritage Trail

November 21, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration has awarded $340,000 to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for the Black Belt Nature and Heritage Trail.

“Alabama’s Black Belt region is full of rich history and culture,” said Shelby.  “Visitors who travel through this region have a unique opportunity to experience the Black Belt by walking the Edmund Pettus Bridge, visiting the Gee’s Bend quilters, and enjoying its Native American history.  This important funding will allow ALDOT to develop an interactive educational program that will engage visitors and teach them about the Black Belt.”
