Shelby Announces $9,500 for Egypt Volunteer Fire Department

December 5, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the Department of Homeland Security will release $9,500 for the Egypt Volunteer Fire Department in Etowah County, Alabama.  The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that Alabama’s first responders have the tools and training necessary to safely protect our communities,” said Shelby. “The Egypt Volunteer Fire Department will use this funding for its operations and safety programs.  This grant is evidence of our nation’s continued commitment to our first responders.”

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded these funds as a part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This program will distribute $500 million in direct federal assistance to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations nationwide this year.
