Shelby Announces $2.2 Million for Gulf Shores

March 24, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $2.2 million to the City of Gulf Shores for a community storm shelter.

“The devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina renewed concerns about the vulnerability of our coastal communities,” said Shelby.  “Although the City of Gulf Shores is located in a region that is highly susceptible to hurricanes and other severe weather, the community lacks a proper shelter for its citizens. This funding will be used to construct a community storm shelter in Gulf Shores that will accommodate up to 805 occupants during storm events.”

Including FEMA funds, the total expected cost of the project is $2,934,694.
