Shelby Announces $343,011 for Russellville Fire Department

March 4, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $343,011 to the Russellville Fire Department.  The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.

“Firefighters are our nation’s true first responders,” said Shelby.  “For this reason, we must ensure that our local fire departments have the resources and personnel necessary to fully protect our communities.  This important grant will assist the Russellville Fire Department to recruit and retain firefighters so it will be adequately prepared to respond to any emergency.”

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded these funds as a part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. SAFER is a part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which will distribute $490 million in direct federal assistance this year to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations nationwide.
