U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, a senior member on the Senate Appropriations Committee, will announce $15 million in federal funding for the Tobyhanna Army Depot on Thursday afternoon. Senator Specter supported the funding as contained in the President’s budget.
The federal funding will be used to expand and modernize Tobyhanna Army Depot’s capacity to repair large tactical communications, intelligence, surveillance and radar weapons systems for the U.S. military. The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations measure, which was signed into law on September 30, 2008.
Tobyhanna Army Depot is the largest, full service electronics maintenance facility in the Department of Defense. The Depot is also Northeastern Pennsylvania’s largest employer with approximately 5,700 employees.
