Speech at the Army's 231st Birthday Celebration
June 15, 2006
Thank you for the opportunity to speak on such a momentous occasion. I am especially privileged because I was once in your ranks myself. I would not be a US Senator today if I did not have the virtues that the Army instilled in me.
Today I am honored to celebrate the brave soldiers of the United States Army that continue to serve our nation in peace and in war. They have given more than anyone to the cause of freedom. Because of the quality of men and women that make up the United States Army, our forces are the most elite and respected in the world.
I just returned from Iraq and was able to witness firsthand the courage, dedication, and discipline that I am speaking about. Their sacrifice has brought the flame of freedom to the Iraqi people.
The Army has also continued to keep America safe from the terrorism that plaques our world today. It is the Army that has captured Saddam Hussein. It is the Army who has hunted down many al-Qaeda members. And it is the Army that will bring stability to Iraq, and protect the future of America.
Yesterday in the Senate we passed S. Res. 512, honoring the Army and its many accomplishments. I would like to present a copy of the Resolution to Secretary Harvey…
Here’s to the next 231 years of freedom. May God Bless the United States Army.
