Gallery: Enzi Honors America's Past and Present Heroes
Updated on: May 22, 2006
Veterans Day 2005 Speech
Veterans Day is a day to honor some of our nation’s true heroes, the men and women who serve and who have served in America’s Armed Forces. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who selflessly dedicate their lives to protect our freedoms and liberties are honored and remembered on this day.
This week, as many of our sons, daughters, neighbors, and friends continue to serve in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world to ensure our safety and security here at home, we have the opportunity to honor those who have served. Our veterans, past, present and future are an indispensable part of what makes our country the greatest nation in the world. Wyoming has had several hundred service men and women deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, and every day, we should remember our neighbors who have been sent to defend our freedoms.
Every day I am reminded that the liberty and prosperity that we enjoy as Americans is not free. Threats to our nation and our way of life are no longer defined by foreign borders with distinct targets. The current War on Terrorism has 21st century threats and the understanding of modern warfare has had to adapt. Our soldiers are being called upon to face these growing challenges. One of the most important things we can do to help them is to recognize their service and show appreciation for their sacrifice and patriotism.
Wyoming is proud to have more than 57,000 veterans. Please join with me today by thanking our nation’s heroes for their courage, valor, sacrifice, fortitude and service to protect our cities and our citizens.
To all American soldiers, past and present...a grateful nation salutes you.
U.S. Senator Mike Enzi

On May 22, 2004, Senator Mike Enzi attended the Aerospace Industry Association Team America Rocketry Challenge at The Plains, VA, about an hour outside of Washington, D.C. The contest requires that teams of students from middle school to high school age design and build a two-stage rocket that can fly to an altitude of 1,250 feet -- no more, no less -- and return a payload of two raw eggs back to the ground unbroken. Across the nation, over 7,000 students in 600 teams participated in regional fly-offs, but only the highest scoring teams were able to qualify to come to The Plains for the finals competition.

The Monday, Sept. 1, 2003 Washington Post has a front page article about Andrew Barr, a retired real estate broker, who now makes money to give away. "There's nothing wrong with having money, " he said. "But once you make money, you should do something with it, not just sit there and let it pile up."
That's the challenge all of us face. It doesn't matter how much you make - it does matter what you do with what you make! My work on the HIV/AIDS problem and especially my trip to Africa have brought this thought home. HIV/AIDS presents a whole world of challenges to the whole world.
U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo. accompanied Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Norm Coleman, R-Minn., Mike DeWine, R-Ohio and John Warner, R-Va. to Africa in August to meet with officials to discuss ways to combat HIV/AIDS on the continent.
