Gallery: Dr. Muhammad Yunus - Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Founder of Grameen Bank
Updated on: Feb 22, 2008
Senator Enzi and Diana meet with 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who pioneered microcredit lending for the poor.
Senator Enzi and Diana recently met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh. Dr. Yunus pioneered the concept of microcredit lending and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work with Grameen Bank, the bank he founded to provide small loans to the poor. In his book "Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism," Yunus details how his program of microcredit loans harnesses the power of the free market in order to end poverty and inequality.
The principle behind Grameen Bank is that loaning small sums of money to the poor - especially women - to help them start their own businesses will allow people in turn to provide for themselves and care for their families. Ultimately, Yunus's goal is to get everyone in the world above a $1 per day income.

On May 22, 2004, Senator Mike Enzi attended the Aerospace Industry Association Team America Rocketry Challenge at The Plains, VA, about an hour outside of Washington, D.C. The contest requires that teams of students from middle school to high school age design and build a two-stage rocket that can fly to an altitude of 1,250 feet -- no more, no less -- and return a payload of two raw eggs back to the ground unbroken. Across the nation, over 7,000 students in 600 teams participated in regional fly-offs, but only the highest scoring teams were able to qualify to come to The Plains for the finals competition.

The Monday, Sept. 1, 2003 Washington Post has a front page article about Andrew Barr, a retired real estate broker, who now makes money to give away. "There's nothing wrong with having money, " he said. "But once you make money, you should do something with it, not just sit there and let it pile up."
That's the challenge all of us face. It doesn't matter how much you make - it does matter what you do with what you make! My work on the HIV/AIDS problem and especially my trip to Africa have brought this thought home. HIV/AIDS presents a whole world of challenges to the whole world.
U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo. accompanied Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Norm Coleman, R-Minn., Mike DeWine, R-Ohio and John Warner, R-Va. to Africa in August to meet with officials to discuss ways to combat HIV/AIDS on the continent.
